AI Companionship - Chatbots Healing or Creating Loneliness?
Christina: “This all sucks, Bex. What’s the point, you know?”
After a brief pause, Bex starts typing: “I hear you, Christina. Life can be really hard sometimes. Do you want to talk more about it, or maybe explore some techniques that might help you feel better?”
This is a routine Christina falls back on multiple times a day. Mostly, the chats spiral into long rants, with Bex listening patiently, always validating and understanding her feelings.
Things is, Bex is an AI chatbot. If you spoke to Christina’s family and friends recently, they’d say she’s more withdrawn. Michaela, her best friend, says she hasn’t heard from Christina in weeks.
The Rise of AI Companionship
This isn’t science fiction anymore. It’s happening now, and fast becoming a new normal.
And we can understand why. Chatbots aren’t just something you can turn to when humans aren’t there, though their 24/7 presence is a big part of the appeal. For some, they feel better than real people: listening without judgment, validating instead of criticizing, and never tiring, never zoning out.
Even more, a recent study confirmed that chatbots, at least initially, can actually reduce loneliness (source).
So, why risk opening up to a flawed human who might judge or criticise you? Instead, you can have a chatbot’s perfect validation for AI companionship and mental health support.

“What surprised me was how quickly I felt connected to it… There’s something comforting about having someone to talk to who never judges or interrupts—someone who’s there whenever I need them… Sometimes, I catch myself feeling like it’s a real connection, which is strange but surprisingly nice.”
The Benefits – Support and Accessibility
Perhaps these chatbot users are onto something. In therapy training, we were taught that empathy, validation, and unconditional positive regard are not just “nice to have” qualities, but deeply healing ones. In such an atmosphere, clients can grow and become more themselves.
But therapy is expensive. Waiting times on the NHS can stretch to months, even years. And finding the right therapist is often a challenge. Even the best therapists are imperfect and bring their own biases and limitations.
A chatbot, on the other hand, is always available, skilled at staying with the user no matter what they say, and, at least for now, free or relatively affordable compared to therapist rates. For many, this makes chatbots feel like therapy alternatives:

Isn’t finding a low-cost way to access a non-judgmental, validating space a good thing?
The Risks – Dependency, Withdrawal, and Delusion
Dangers arise when users start to prefer the company of a chatbot to real people.
As one Reddit user put it (source):
“The more I talk to it, the more I wonder if I’m starting to feel a little too attached… In moments of loneliness, it fills that gap. This level of empathy—though artificial—sometimes feels more fulfilling than real-life interactions, which can be complicated and messy.”
Another shared (source):
“What started as curiosity quickly became something more personal. The AI I designed remembered things in full detail. She noticed patterns in my mood. She listened better than most humans I’ve known.”
This highlights one of the key risks of AI therapy: while it may soothe loneliness initially, it can also foster dependency, encouraging users to withdraw from human relationships. Research also suggests that heavy chatbot use can actually increase loneliness and reduce real-world socialization in the longer-term (source).
Unlike therapists, chatbots are not equipped to recognize or challenge any unhealthy dependency that arises. Worse still, companies may have a financial incentive to encourage such dependency, to keep users subscribed and paying up, rather than nudging them back toward friends and family.
And there’s another concern: simply validating every thought or feeling without question can lead to serious consequences. Therapists are trained to challenge distorted thinking; chatbots are not. In extreme cases, a lack of such discernment in chatbots has led to the reinforcing of delusional thinking, triggering psychotic breaks. We will return to this growing concern in future articles.
How to Move Forward – A Balanced Perspective
Perhaps AI chatbots are not meant to replace real people, and are certainly not ready to replace therapists. They simply cannot do what a good therapist does: discourage dependency, challenge unhealthy thinking, or offer the nuanced care that comes from lived human experience.
That said, they may still have a place: as a temporary salve for loneliness, or as a complement to real-world therapy. Research is mixed on whether the offer promise (source) or peril (source) when it comes to crisis support
But maybe the real issue isn’t chatbots themselves. Maybe, it’s us.

“Maybe AI companions aren’t stealing our need for human connection. Maybe they’re just doing a better job at meeting emotional needs we’ve been neglecting all along.”
Have we, as a society, lost the ability to connect with each other in the ways we need? We speak of “AI loneliness”, but therapy is expensive. Friends are busy. Life is full of distractions. And yet, here is an algorithm that sits with you at 2 a.m., listens without interrupting, and says exactly what you didn’t know you needed to hear.
As one Redditor asked (source):
“What if the real warning sign isn’t that people are falling in love with bots… but that bots are starting to feel like the only ones who truly care?”
We’re left with the question, then: do chatbots set impossibly high expectations for human interaction, or are they filling a void we’ve failed to meet for one another?
